06thof November 2010 - Club Lake

Club Lake 06thof November 2010

On Saturday Tony and I finally made it out onto the Main Range this Spring. We arrived at the Charlotte Pass turn around to find only small drifts left. We couldn’t decide on Blue or Club Lake so we walked to the Blue Lake lookout to make our decision. Stag Gully looked very thin and the only clean line down the Amphitheatre was on the far lookers left...more

Dynafit TLT5 Review 3rd of November 2010

Dynafit TLT5 Review 3rd of November 2010

Telemark phat contributor Owain Williams has been toying with the dark side of AT for a couple of seasons now and when he sent me a his first impressions of his new Dynafit TLT5 boots I wasn’t sure if the review belonged on a Telemark site. I decided it should be included since telemark boot manufacturers should be able to manufacture boots as light and functional for touring as the TLT5...more

Charlotte Pass 15th of October 2010

The forecasts of a low altitude dump came true, for Victoria. Here in the Snowys we were not so blessed, we got the low snow, but we didn’t get the dump. I awoke to snow on the car at home and low snow on the other side of the dam, but sadly the depth wasn’t there higher up. This system was southerly, so all of the remaining snowpack was only dust on crust and all of the new snow collected in previously bare aspects, but not deep enough to ski...more

Mt Perisher 09thof October 2010

Today I managed to find a spare hour after completing some fieldwork and I managed a quick ski on Mt Perisher since Kosciuszko Road is still only open to Spencer’s Creek, lazy RTA. The cover is good on easterly and southern aspects down to 1800m and there is still a bucket load of snow on the Main Range, I think there will be drifts to ski well into November this year...more

Leather Barrel Creek 25nd of September 2010

With all the snow hanging around at high altitudes Tony and I decided we’d give The Corrie a go and see if it was still in condition. We got our free season passes from Thredbo after we showed them our Perisher Season Passes (sadly only valid for the day, but a freebie is a freebie) and had a quick run in The Basin before riding Karel’s for a bit of laziness...more

Perisher 19th of September 2010

Perisher was classic spring skiing this weekend, firm in the morning, softening by mid morning, heavy by lunch time and firming back up in the afternoon. On Saturday I skied with Tom Gellie, who was running a telemark Clinic for Spring Sessions (APSI instructor training event) to get some footage of the current APSI Telemark Demos. I didn’t see a patch anywhere in Perisher and we skied straight onto almost every lift... more

Mt Tate Zone 17th of September 2010

With the recent good weather and the chance of rain next week I decided to take advantage and have a stroll out to the Mt Tate area. I couldn’t find anyone else to come along and surprisingly I did not see anyone else all day. The first thing to say is there is still a shed load of snow, you can still easily ski to Illawong, and if the weather is kind you might still be able to on the long weekend...more

Perisher Report 14th & 15th of August 2010

I started skiing at Smiggins this morning at about 9:30. The place was dead, there was no one anywhere, a story I would feel throughout the day. The cover is holding up better than it has in years, Blanchy’s has a couple of small patches, but the cover is almost complete. Snow made areas like Front Valley, Goats Gully and Towers have an excellent cover. The snow was firm and fast early and was starting to soften by 10:30 at Eyre. I had to leave at 12:00 so I decided I’d see what the snow was like on the east face of Mt Wheatley. It had turned to perfect corn, I had a blast and if it weren’t for my afternoon commitments I would have lapped it all day...more

Better late than never. A Mt Jagungal Trip report from Owain Williams

The cover in August 2010 improved dramatically throughout the month. After doing two multi-day trips in early August, my partner and I headed out for 4 days touring around Valentines and the Kerries. It was a bit too soon after the beginning of the season to have strong snow-bridges, and the Geehi was flowing fast and deep...more

Perisher 11th of September 2010

Today was brilliant, fresh snow, blue skies and a cool breeze to prevent the hill from becoming a sweathouse. I arrived at Perisher at 8:00am and the car park was already half full thanks to the Interschool Nationals. It was skiercross today and the last thing I wanted was to be caught up in all that mess on my way to Mt Perisher, so I walked up Kosciuszko Road to Eyre T-Bar. The hill is still full of snow, the best I’ve seen since 2004...more
